In this class, you’ll learn how to take a character from a flat, formless idea to a living, breathing, three-dimensional person that readers can root for, care about, and fall in love with.
Topics covered in this workshop include the basics of creating character, as well as their backstory. We’ll also examine how body language can define what your character is feeling and thinking—and what he might want to hide. The place your character lives helps define him, so we’ll look at settings. And what’s a story without dialogue? We examine how dialogue, dialect, and accents can make your character real.
Idiosyncrasies make your character memorable, so we’ll look at what habits your characters might have. We’ll also look at clothes, and how they reflect your character’s personality, and I’ll show you how your character’s actions and others’ reactions to them reveal character. And of course, we’ll study the goals and motivations of your characters. As a special added bonus, we’ll look at what I call the Supporting Cast—secondary characters and how to use them.
Included in this workshop is Your Character Workbook, filled with resources, worksheets, and more!
